Language Arts
We use the Sadlier Standards Based Progress English Language Arts program in first through fifth grades. It is a comprehensive language arts program that incorporates reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This research-based program provides challenging texts and text-based questioning using both fictional and nonfictional reading selections.
Along with the Sadlier program, we will also be using other resources to help us focus on specific concepts in grammar and spelling. Spelling will incorporate high frequency words along with spelling patterns. Both are important to create a strong foundation for reading and writing.
Concepts we will work on this year include: digraphs, blends, spelling patterns, phonics, main ideas and supporting details, cause and effect, sequence of events, homonyms, antonyms, idioms, figurative language, onomatopoeia, context clues, word choice, organization, genres of writing, reference skills, ABC order, dictionary skills, nouns, verbs, adjectives, complete sentences, run-on sentences, and punctuation. WOW!!!
